We are tacking on the star gazing after the fish boil due to the date, August 11. Every year, around the 10th to the 13th of August, the earth passes through an area in its orbit that produces several meteors, also known as shooting stars. There is a good chance we may get to see a few on the 11th, in addition to the summer constellations and the planets currently visible.
Elaine Bentley will begin with a couple of activities, introducing what prominent constellations we will look for, plus learn some interesting facts, trivia, history and a touch of folklore as we get out into the field to gaze at the night sky.
Bring a good pair of binoculars as they are capable of bringing into focus Jupiter and at least four of its moons.
Books to read in preperation. The books by H.A. Rey (the Curious George author) offer excellent intros to the night sky. For Adults, The Stars, a New Way to See Them. For older children, Find the Constellations, and for younger children, Curious George Discovers the Stars. All are in print and widely available.
